Minneriya National Park is located in Sri Lanka's North Central Province approximately 25 kilometres from Habarana and close to the ancient cities of Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya. Directions

The park is easily accessible by private vehicle, organised safari tour or taxi from Habarana, Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa. Most visitors begin their safari from Habarana where licensed safari operators provide experienced guides and specially equipped four wheel drive vehicles for exploring the park safely.

Entrance Fees & Park Regulations

Visitors must purchase an entrance ticket issued by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Additional charges apply for safari jeeps, guide services and vehicle entry. All visitors are required to remain inside safari vehicles throughout the tour, follow park regulations, avoid feeding wildlife and maintain a respectful distance from animals to ensure their safety and conservation.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Minneriya National Park is between July and October when the famous Elephant Gathering reaches its peak. Afternoon safaris typically between 2:30 PM and 6:00 PM offer the highest chance of witnessing large elephant herds gathering around the reservoir while enjoying cooler temperatures and beautiful evening light.
