Built during the reign of King Kashyapa I between 477 and 495 AD Sigiriya served as a royal palace, fortress and a administrative centre. Following the king's reign it became a Buddhist monastery for centuries. Today, it is recognised as one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning and remains one of Sri Lanka's most treasured archaeological sites.
One of most famous features is the enormous Lion's Paw entrance where visitors climb through the remains of a colossal stone lion that once guarded the palace above. At the summit travellers can explore ancient palace foundations, royal pools and enjoy breathtaking 360 degree views of forests, villages, lakes and distant mountain ranges.
Halfway up the rock visitors encounter the world famous Sigiriya Frescoes, vibrant paintings of elegantly dressed celestial maidens dating back over 1,500 years. Visitors can reach Sigiriya by private vehicle, taxi, organised tour or public bus from Colombo, Kandy, Dambulla, Habarana and nearby towns. Many travellers stay in Sigiriya or Habarana and make the short journey to the entrance by tuk-tuk or bicycle. Parking facilities and visitor amenities are available near the entrance.
An entrance ticket is required to access Sigiriya with separate admission rates for local and international visitors. Tickets are purchased at the official entrance before beginning the climb.
